This exquisitely painted 1920’s reclining nude - clearly painted from life in vigorous and expressive strokes - is a technically brilliant update of the old master tradition. Renowned British artist, Walter Ernest Webster (1878 - 1959) has deftly combined classical art with 1920’s sex appeal.

Webster came to prominence between the 1st and 2nd World Wars. Known for his elegant portraits, his work was characterised by a focus on female beauty and grace.  He was particularly skilled at capturing the textures of fabrics and the interplay of light on his subjects.

Having received his artistic training at the prestigious Royal Academy Schools in London, Webster refined his skills with a classical approach, drawing inspiration from the rich traditions of the Victorian and Edwardian eras.  His work was exhibited widely during his career, including regular showings at the Royal Academy and internationally at the Paris Salon.
